Last night I started the paint work, getting the face and hair done with gouache. Today, I painted the outfit, first the black top blocked in solid with gouache, then all the red parts with acrylics. I chose acrylics because I knew I’d be painting white dots all over, and the red gouache re-wets and mixes all too easily. This way I was able to get bright, clean lines when I painted the dots (also with acrylics). I finished it up with colored pencils over the black, using grays to create the detail. Hopefully I’ll have time yet tonight to get the textured gesso down on the skin areas so I can begin the oil pastels right away tomorrow…

Work progress 11/01 – painting
I started the day masking the image as usual, but instead of setting up to airbrush the background, I unmasked the dress for airbrushing. I used a few tones of bright green acrylic over the entire dress, bringing in the darker tones for the subtle shading to give it shape.
Next, I removed all the masking and began painting. Much of the afternoon was spent painting acrylic white on all the dots of the dress. Then, I moved on to the face, painting the eye lines, eyebrows and lips with watercolors and gouache. I painted the hair next, using various browns. I finished the day painting the cupcake and the body outline…

designing new art project
Yesterday and today I spent going through photos once again, searching for ideas. I came up with a couple, and decided on this one…

It’s a take on a classic pin-up style image. As such, I may keep the background white and go right into the painting tomorrow.
