New art completed – New Year’s Pop

I finessed a few more details this morning, and now I consider it completed. It’s now available in the store here.

work progress – skin blocked in

I managed to get the textured gesso painted in last night, so today I was able to start right in on the skin coloring. Using colored pencils for the color, followed by oil pastels to blend, I worked from area to area until the whole body was blocked in…

Tonight I worked on the details, and it’s nearly finished. I didn’t have a chance to photograph it again, but tomorrow it should be done.

work progress – finishing the paint step

Today I worked on completing the painted areas, starting where I left off yesterday, the garters. I used black gouache, thinning it a little toward the right edge for highlight. I then used the same paint for the shoes, again thinning for lighter areas. Next, I used green watercolor to paint the bottle, mixing in some black for the base and shaded areas. I added some light ochres and yellow for the foil on the top of the bottle.
I decided to once again airbrush the stockings, so I masked them off, then used a mix of flesh tone acrylics to form the shape of the legs. Once dry, I removed the masking, then began the tedious task of drawing in the pattern with dark brown colored pencil.
To finish the day, I used white gouache to highlight the shoes and bottle…

work progress – background & paint begins

I masked out the image to start today, then airbrushed a very light gray over the entire piece. This will give the whites a little ‘pop’. Then I sprayed a little burnt umber for the shadow at her feet, followed by a mix of red, opal and purple ‘sparkles’ over all.
Once dry, I removed the masking, and began painting a rainbow of colors in little dots over the entire background, creating confetti. I added a few streamers with some of the colors.
Next, I washed some dark ‘dirty’ gray (mixed with ochres and browns very lightly) in the area where the champagne will be spraying out. On top of that I added some thick white acrylic for the spray itself…

Later, I began painting, starting with the face. Then I colored the cardboard tiara with grays, followed by bright yellow for the design on it. Next, I painted the hair with a variety of browns. I’m trying something a little different this time, painting the edges of some areas with flesh in hopes it will create a cleaner connection to the oil pastels later. I then painted the purple bra, as well as the purple soles of the shoes. I started the garters, but will get to them fully tomorrow…

New concept designed and ready

After that big project, I’m happy to move on to something new, and since I had a shoot last weekend, I have plenty to work with. One set we did was a New Year’s Eve party motif, and although a bit late now, I think it’s a fun image…
