new art – “Stocking Stuffer”
New artwork started
Working with multiple mediums has its advantages, but also many challenges. My greatest one is finding paper textures that work well with all of the mediums. I’ve been working mostly with ‘hot press’ because it doesn’t have much of any texture, so airbrush, pencils and paint all look nice and smooth. The trouble is the oil pastels go on too thin (transparent), so I’ve always had to use a textured gesso in those areas (typically just the skin).
I recently picked up a few varieties of different papers to try out. For this new piece, I’m using a cold press illustration board from Arches. The concept for this piece is another comic book inspired idea. A sexy woman in tight black wardrobe, holding a pistol…

I masked out the image, then began airbrushing the background. First I mixed a light green/turquoise acrylic and covered the entire board. Next, I mixed a darker version (no green, just turquoise, blue and a bit of black) and worked around the edges inward, avoiding the star pattern as I went along. It wasn’t as dark as I had wanted, so I mixed some more black and ultramarine into it and again worked inward…

The paper texture has begun to show, but it’s not bothering me.
Next, I spent a couple days painting, since only a small amount of the image will be skin. I painted the face first, using gouache, then the hair with a mix of gouache and watercolors, building up layers of color. I painted the pistol and the leg-strapped holster with various dark grays, adding some black and white for shadows and highlights.
This paper holds water nicely, giving me some time to actually spread and blend the paint before it embeds itself, causing edging. This allowed me to cover the outfit in a smooth gradient from light gray to dark blue-black. Still, it didn’t have quite the look I wanted, so I re applied the masking around those areas, then used the airbrush to finesse the look. White highlights complete the outfit…

Yesterday I worked further on all the details to completion. Then the remainder of the day I worked on scanning the large piece (original is 40″x30″) and stitching it together (too big for a single scan).
It’s now done and available here.

New art completed – Peppermint Sticks
Today I worked on all the details, mostly in the face and hands, using colored pencils and oil pastels.
I’m satisfied with it, so it’s available now in the store here.

designing and beginning a new piece
Here we are again, looking through photos trying to find the next project. I have so many potential images in the works now, if I get to them all I should be working steadily for a few months to come.
For now, I’ve chosen one that I had roughly designed a while ago, but seeing it with fresh eyes today sparked an idea, and I’m moving forward with it…

Beginning New work
I spent the last few days going through photos and working on a couple concepts. There’s one idea I’ve been playing with for a while now, and I think I figured it out and am ready to begin it.
I have it drawn on my 23×29″ illustration board, ready to be masked and airbrushed…

New Art completed – Witch Magic
I almost called it done last night after spending the day working on the details, but some thing seemed a bit off, so I hesitated. Today, I worked on those issues and am now calling it complete. It’s now in the store here.
New artwork started today – Twisted
I finished up the design from my newest shoot last night, and got it drawn on the illustration board this morning. In my enthusiasm, I forgot to take a photo of it though, so there’s only one shot for today (I did enhance the pencil lines so it’s still visible and not blown out).
I masked out the image, then began layering the background on. First step, I filled a brush with light turquoise acrylic paint (watered down), and dripped and sprayed it over all. I repeated this step with a blue. Then, with the drops still wet, I used the airbrush to blow just air onto it, directing from the center to the outer edges of the board.
Once that was dry, I airbrushed various acrylic colors over it, starting with a magenta, working darker toward purple and then blue. I finished the airbrushing with a very dark red along the edges.
To complete the background, I once again splattered some of the turquoise paint over it. Hopefully it looks funky and fun…
