work progress – finishing the details

I worked on all the details today. I started with white acrylic paint for the hair clips, making them bright and solid against the black hair. Then I used acrylic and gouache to add color to the pieces.
Next, I used colored pencils to outline everything, and add some more details to the face. Then, I used a gray gouache wash on the blouse to deepen its shadows and bring out more detail.
Finally, I used oil pastels and colored pencils to finish the face. I believe it is completed now, but too late to scan. So, for now, here’s a quick photo of it…

Today I blocked in all the skin areas, using pencils for the colors and oil pastels for the blending. With that done, I began detail work in the face, but only a start. Tomorrow I should finish…

work progress 11/9 – more paint work

I got through most of the rest of the painting today, although there’s still a few details to add, and probably some enhancing at the end.
I started with the skirt, deepening the color, and adding more texture using acrylics this time. With the same color, I matched the leg ribbons. Then I worked on the gloves with turquoise acrylics (also the matching decoration on the shoes). Next, I washed some tan gouache into the blouse where the skin shows through. I brought out a fine brush and white acrylic to add detail to the apron edges, and create a lace design on the leggings. I had a choice to complete the paint details tonight or get the textured gesso down for the skin, so I chose the latter, knowing it would be best to let it dry over night…

Today I masked out the image and airbrushed the background with a few values of blue acrylic. I finished it with a mix of aqua and red opalescent ‘sparkles’…

Later, I began painting, starting with the face, then the hair. Next, I blocked in various areas – the blouse and head piece in an off-white, the gloves in turquoise, and the skirt in bright pink. I used the same bright pink with a lot of water for the bra showing through the blouse. I also filled in the area of her legs where there will be a white lace stocking with a light flesh tone. I used a neutral gray for the shoes and apron, using watercolor techniques to create a soft wrinkle texture. I used a soft pink for around her eyes (just a temporary thing, since this area will be covered by oil pastels later), on the leg ribbons, and on her one sock.
I then worked more in the texture for the skirt, bringing in hints of brown where her legs show through, and building up darker pinks for shading and texture.

I spent the last few days going through photos and working on a couple concepts. There’s one idea I’ve been playing with for a while now, and I think I figured it out and am ready to begin it.
I have it drawn on my 23×29″ illustration board, ready to be masked and airbrushed…
