starting new piece – phase one

Okay, I’m behind again in my posting. I was content with the design mentioned in the previous post earlier in the week, so I got it drawn on the illustration board…

Next, I masked it all, then airbrushed the background. I started with a very light yellow acrylic, covering and oval (or egg shape) in the bottom half. I followed that with a light red, then into the purple to fill out the rest of the board. By the top it was almost pure ultramarine, thinned so not to get too dark. I finished the background with a covering of pearl and red ‘sparkle’ acrylic…

attempting to start a new piece

This is just not my week for work. I finally settled on a concept, and decided to try a different technique. This piece will be very dark, so in trying to imagine how I would handle it, I figured I could airbrush the entire board dark, then use colored pencils to build up the lighter areas. Great, but when I started the airbrush, it didn’t work. I had it apart since the last job, so it should be clean, but I cleaned it again. Still troublesome, so I fiddled with the settings and finally it started to work again. So, what should have been a 15-20 minute quick two-color spray, turned into an entire evening of frustration. I’ve walked away for the night, so tomorrow I’ll see if it’s dark and solid enough to begin the actual work.

work progress – jungle background

It took nearly two days, but I came close to finishing the background today. I think I’ll add another plant in the foreground later, and perhaps pencil in some added details, but otherwise it’s done.
I started yesterday with masking the image. Then I airbrushed the top portion with a light blue acrylic, followed by a tan in the lower half. Then I filled the mid-section with a moss green, completing the base of the background. From there I started painting acrylics with a brush, starting with a darker moss green, stippling the idea of leaves from the top to nearly the bottom. I varied the brushes to get a greater variety of textures and sizes, and also altered the green acrylic from brownish to bright green. Once that was filled up, I airbrushed again, this time using a light gray-green on the top half or so of the foliage, sending it further back in the distance. Next, I returned to stippling, this time with more vibrant greens, and only at the bottom of the foliage area.
With the background jungle complete, I started painting the tree. I started with a broad wash of gray-tan acrylic. I then built up the color and texture with various browns, tans, yellows, and gray. With the lightest gray-brown I painted in the vines, followed by a dark brown for their shadows. For the ground, I staggered brush ‘hits’ with various browns, building up the terrain. Finally, I painted in the foreground foliage with greens and yellows ( and a touch of white).
It was nice to remove the masking at last, seeing the outline once again of the model, which had been lost with all the paint work I had done on top of the masking…

work progress – new background

As promised in last night’s blog, here’s the photo of the new color for the background…

Also, I’ve noticed I’ve been formatting the photos for this image as though the painting was 23×29″, but it’s actually 22×30″, so the earlier shots probably look a bit squatted. Oh well. As long as the final scan gets the proportions right, it won’t matter. :)
